Elvis, Money, & Church Budgets
Most churches are in the midst of planning their budgets for 2009. I hope you'll be in prayer for your church and your household as next year approaches. We should consider money as a tool for the kingdom and not the main goal of life:
19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV)
Elvis still out-earns many living celebrities. One might say that his success is significant. But in the words of Bob Buford, we should all seek significance over success-- living a life for God's Kingdom and not our own.
Our church will vote on its budget this December after it is approved by the Diaconate and the Session. Copies are always available by request throughout the year, and will also be available in advance of the meeting. Pray that we will be good stewards of our resources and communicate our goals for 2009 effectively.
Until then, here are two links from CNN that got me thinking about money and finances today:
